A lively barn scene, Anne Marie Hall’s 1971 ‘Untitled (Pig Pen)’ teems with life. A litter of piglets cling to their mothers, watched keenly by cats and crows. Hall’s sense of proportion is askew, her pigs huge and cats small, scampering across the yard’s looping fence. Reminiscent of the absurdity of life, a nursery rhyme or intricate interplays of life and threat, ‘Untitled (Pig Pen)’ sees Hall draw with beguiling mastery.

Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in an otherwise male dominated field. Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, her absence in the canon of Australian art is being redressed. For collectors of modern art, female artists or those interested in Melbourne’s history, ‘Untitled (Pig Pen)’ will intrigue.
