Karan Hayman is an Australian artist currently based in Kyneton, Victoria. One of the founding members of Melbourne’s Roar Studios, an early artist-run-initiative starting in 1982, she alongside other artists produced work that acted as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, imagining a new model for exhibiting and sharing art. Since the days of Roar Studios, Hayman has found success as a contemporary artist, finding inspiration in her hometown’s changing landscapes.
In ‘Cloudy Skies,’ Hayman represents a contemporary surrealist scene of a boat sailing through forest towards the sky. Demonstrating a confident command of composition, line, and colour, Hayman employs pattern to create a sense of motion within this scene, while her sharply defined, flattened forms lend the work a collage-like sensibility. Both dynamic and whimsical, ‘Cloudy Skies’ is vibrantly reflective of Hayman’s imaginative and playful approach to image-making.
Hayman is represented in numerous public, private and corporate collections both in Australia and internationally, including the National Gallery of Victoria, ArtBank, New Parliament House and the National Gallery of Australia. For lovers of expressive Australian art, Karan Hayman is a wonderful addition to any collection.
