Karan Hayman is an Australian artist currently based in Kyneton, Victoria. One of the founding members of Melbourne’s Roar Studios, an early artist-run-initiative starting in 1982, she alongside other artists produced work that acted as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, imagining a new model for exhibiting and sharing art. Since the days of Roar Studios, Hayman has found success as a contemporary artist, finding inspiration in her hometown’s changing landscapes.

In ‘Horses Grazing’, Hayman presents a contemporary surrealist scene of two horses grazing near the sea. With an assured command of composition, line, and colour, Hayman uses pattern to generate a sense of movement, while her crisp, flattened forms introduce a distinctly collage-like quality. Energetic and quietly whimsical, the work captures the essence of Hayman’s imaginative and playful visual language.

Hayman is represented in numerous public, private and corporate collections both in Australia and internationally, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Bank, New Parliament House and the National Gallery of Australia. For lovers of expressive Australian art, Karan Hayman is a wonderful addition to any collection.
