Gerald Hughes, known best as a post-war artist, has produced a body of work devoted to the calmer moments of Australian life after settling down on the Southern Coast. Also known as Port Jackson, ‘Views from Goat Island’ lovingly considers every detail of a plein-air trip to Goat Island: from the ripples traced by the Ferries, to the Bulldog Ants creeping along the Foxtail Grass. ‘Views from Goat Island’ serves as a warm memento of a picturesque Sydney afternoon enveloped in the haze of sunset (or perhaps, a sunrise).
The subtle grain, colour gradient and embossing of this etching is remarkable, ‘Views from Goat Island’ would perhaps find its place in a Sydney home or office.
Hughes has held numerous solo exhibitions throughout England and America, including the Chicago Art Dealer Fair and in Hamilton Bermuda. An extensive traveller hailing from England, Hughes has showcased art across France, Italy, Bermuda and the West Indies– and was for some time Principal and Lecturer at Jamaica College of Art. For the collector of prints, landscape and post-war art – or perhaps someone who just appreciates the quieter moments in life – Hughes’ work is a brilliant find.
