Robert Jacks represents one of Australia’s most esteemed and distinctive abstract artists. From selling out his first solo exhibition in 1966, spending ten-years on a self-described ‘international internship’ in New York and Canada through to a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2014, Jacks’ spent a lifetime fine-tuning his visual language.

Against a succulent orange backdrop, ‘Harlequin Red Ground’ centres an hourglass shape. Perhaps an emblem, cubist guitar or evocation of the human body, this form could also be a harlequin, the witty character from Italian commedia dell’arte. Left open to interpretation, one of the joys of Jacks’ work is how he sets up visual puzzles for the eye to savour.

With an illustrious career and representation in all state collections, Jacks’ work is as collectable as it is beautiful. ‘Harlequin Red Ground’ is for collectors of the artist, abstract art or spaces in need of an energetic uplift.
