Ashley Jones hails from Western Australia. His work is set under a broad sun, paying close attention to the play of shadows. It trades in a stillness that is redolent of long summer days, holidays and Sunday afternoons.
‘Tap’, an etching depicting an outdoor tap, embodies this grace. Jones treats the banal as sculptural, using shadow to tinker with surrealism. Rather than just an image of a tap, this work is the poetry of the everyday. It is reminiscent of Jeffrey Smart, whose work was similarly precise and highly finished, a strange yet clear-eyed examination of everyday beauty.
Jones is represented at the National Gallery of Australia. For collectors of still-lives and works on paper, ‘Tap’ is a true find.
