Through her practice, Sydney-based artist Tracey Jones explores the narrative power of objects, often turning her attention to the overlooked fragments of consumer culture. Using her intricate realist painting style, Jones creates powerful and atmospheric compositions, reimagining the concept of ‘used’, and imbuing even the most everyday items with a sense of the untold story.

In ‘Pressed’, Jones creates a detailed still life composition of a pile of folded clothes, offering an intriguing insight into the domestic sphere. As with many of her paintings, Jones uses this work to explore the lifecycle of consumer goods, turning her artistic lens to familiar objects and imbuing them with a suggested narrative. In this layered scene, the garments take on an almost anthropomorphic quality - a shirt cuff lifts itself up, seemingly defying gravity. Although devoid of figures, this painting is replete with evidence of human life.

In the past five years, Jones has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, and has been selected as a finalist in numerous national art prizes, including Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize, the Hornsby Art Prize, and the Meroogal Art Prize. For collectors of realist still life paintings, or those fascinated by the everyday, Jones’ ‘Pressed’ is a compelling discovery.
