Among Australia’s most distinct and celebrated abstractionists, Robert Jacks’s work is both intelligent and intriguing. He is inspired by literary and artistic greats, as well as developments in the visual organisation of space.
Like his literary idol James Joyce, Jacks connects seemingly disparate ideas. His work evokes ideas that are artistic, literary, cosmic and mundane. There exists a visual language here, that is at once imagined and compelling, like constellations in the night sky.
Jacks is the subject of a monograph, represented in most public collections and in 2014, was honoured with a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. This work will illuminate collections of abstract, minimal and cerebral art. It is for fans of Jacks, Joyce and the crossovers between literature, art and ideas.
