Helen Kennedy is a contemporary printmaker and multidisciplinary artist based in Melbourne. Working across multiple mediums, Kennedy’s work is not about the landscape, but instead focuses on our experience of it. Through her works, Kennedy investigates the influence that light has on our perceptions of form and colour, and her artistic practice often transcends categories of figuration and abstraction, working “in the space between the two”.

In ‘Strahan’, the artist’s detailed etching is created directly from a photograph. Representing a trip she took to Strahan, Tasmania, Kennedy instantly evokes the “grey, cold, and wet” atmosphere that she encountered. With a monochromatic palette and strong chiaroscuro tonal contrasts, the perpetual motion of the winter ocean is palpable, with the uneven ocean appearing as an abstract aerial landscape.

Kennedy is an accomplished artist. She is represented across public collections, including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and National Gallery of Victoria. For collectors of contemporary printmaking and lovers of Australian landscape art, ‘Strahan’ is a luminous find.
