Hiroshi Kobayashi is a Perth-based experimental artist whose practice, which he calls ‘Patagraphy’, merges computation, custom-built machinery, and painting. Translating written text, geometric structures, and photography into vector-based formations, Kobayashi’s innovative approach challenges our understanding of what printmaking, painting, and digital art can look like. Through his practice, programmed precision meets the contingencies of fluid mark-making, resulting in works that are richly layered and instantly visually intriguing.

In ‘Parrot 4’, the avian figure appears at once familiar and otherworldly. Rendered through soft lines and gently curving forms, the parrot takes on an almost sculptural, plush-like quality, appearing more like a beloved toy than a living bird. Rendered in vibrant, highly saturated colours, Kobayashi imbues the work with a playful energy, providing a unique artistic interpretation of Australian native wildlife.

Originally from Japan, Kobayashi has exhibited extensively across the world, including in Taipei, Seoul, New York, and Tokyo. Since migrating to Perth in 2015, he has been selected as a finalist in several national art prizes, including the Perth Royal Art Prize, which he won in 2024.
