Hiroshi Kobayashi is a Perth-based experimental artist whose practice, which he calls ‘Patagraphy’, merges computation, custom-built machinery, and painting. Translating written text, geometric structures, and photography into vector-based formations, Kobayashi’s innovative approach challenges our understanding of what printmaking, painting, and digital art can look like. Through his practice, programmed precision meets the contingencies of fluid mark-making, resulting in works that are richly layered and instantly visually intriguing.

In ‘The Player Mini 2’, the artist creates an intriguing and dreamlike composition. On the right, a monochromatic teddy bear emerges, rendered with a sense of tenderness, as if recalled from a distant memory. Beside the beloved toy, a globe floats in vibrant, highly saturated colours, appearing at once otherworldly, mysterious, and strange. Here, Kobayashi’s imagery functions almost as a collection of motifs, with each object becoming a symbolic representation of childhood, memory, and identity.

Originally from Japan, Kobayashi has exhibited extensively across the world, including in Taipei, Seoul, New York, and Tokyo. Since migrating to Perth in 2015, he has been selected as a finalist in several national art prizes, including the Perth Royal Art Prize, which he won in 2024.
