Hiroshi Kobayashi is a Perth-based experimental artist whose practice, which he calls ‘Patagraphy’, merges computation, custom-built machinery, and painting. Translating written text, geometric structures, and photography into vector-based formations, Kobayashi’s innovative approach challenges our understanding of what printmaking, painting, and digital art can look like. Through his practice, programmed precision meets the contingencies of fluid mark-making, resulting in works that are richly layered and instantly visually intriguing.

In ‘Whitfords Beach 2’, the natural scenery of a local Perth beach appears at once familiar and otherworldly, as if captured through a fish-eye lens. Presented within a spherical form, the image takes on a globe-like quality, almost as though viewed from a distant planet. Rendered in vibrant, highly saturated colours, Kobayashi infuses the work with an energetic sense of mystery.

Originally from Japan, Kobayashi has exhibited extensively across the world, including in Taipei, Seoul, New York, and Tokyo. Since migrating to Perth in 2015, he has been selected as a finalist in several national art prizes, including the Perth Royal Art Prize, which he won in 2024.
