Damon Kowarsky is an esteemed contemporary artist. He is inspired by architecture, the colours of the earth and sky, and the relationship between nature and non-natural worlds. Across his practice he has worked in printmaking, drawing and illustration, creating imagery informed by his frequent travels around the world.
The 2022 etching and aquatint, ‘Panorama, Koroitj’ is a print in three parts, featuring an expansive panorama of the rolling hills surrounding the dormant volcano. This natural site near Warrnambool, Victoria, was famously depicted by Eugene von Guérard in his 1855 work ‘Tower Hill’. In the years that followed, the landscape was heavily altered as the area was cleared for grazing and quarrying. When major restoration efforts began in 1961, von Guérard’s painting became an essential reference for identifying which native plants should be reintroduced. To celebrate the success of the restoration, the Warrnambool Art Gallery later invited contemporary artists–including Kowarsky–to reinterpret the same scene captured by von Guérard more than a century earlier. By dividing the vista into three panels, Kowarsky encourages a more attentive engagement with the landscape, inviting a quiet reflection on our relationship to the environment.
Kowarsky has received numerous awards since graduating from the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. He is a current brand ambassador for Faber Castell and has been awarded the Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award and Collie Trust Scholarship in recent years. He has featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally in institutions like the Warrnambool Art Gallery, the Islamic Museum of Australia and Megalo Print Studio.
For collectors of graphic works, ‘Panorama, Koroitj’ is an exciting find, offering a contemporary interpretation that resonates with Australia’s layered artistic and environmental history.
