Through Elena Larkin’s eyes, the land comes alive - layered in texture, colour, and energetic movement. Based on Bundjalung land in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, Larkin draws constant inspiration from the world around her, often painting ‘en plein air’ to capture the landscape as she sees and feels it. Through her practice, the artist explores our human relationship with the land we inhabit, adopting shifting perspectives and considering how we might co-exist with the natural world.
In her painting 'And every time it rains you’re here in my head / like the sun coming out’, Larkin captures an evocative sense of place. Through gestural brushstrokes and a softly toned palette, the landscape is lovingly rendered, with the artist capturing the atmosphere of the place as much as its physical details. Seen through Larkin’s perspective, the work is immersive, drawing the viewer into the scene and inviting them to experience the landscape as she does.
Completing her Master of Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney in 2025, Larkin was also awarded the East Sydney Doctors Scholarship. The artist has been shortlisted for several national art prizes, including the Macquarie Emerging Artist Award in 2024 and the Paddington Art Prize in 2024, where she received the Residency Prize. In 2022, Larkin won the 9x5 Waverley Landscape Prize. For collectors of landscape paintings, Elena Larkin’s works offer an evocative meditation on our connection to the natural world.
