George Feather Lawrence is among Australia’s most significant modernist landscape artists. He studied under Julian Ashton at the Sydney Art School and worked as commercial designer for Paramount Films Art Department, primarily known for his depictions of industrial cities, their railways, narrow streets and tenement houses.
Dated 1967, ‘Township’ is an example of Lawrence’s renowned cityscapes. Textural and cohesive, he pictures a town as it sprawls across a valley, rooftops thatching into a tapestry of modest peaks. Lawrence’s decision to paint cities and towns was in part spurred by William Dobell, who visited him at suburban Paramount. Lawrence, confined to his office, felt he had nothing suitable to paint to which Dobell said, “you have subjects all around you.”
Lawrence is represented across Australian public collections. Inspired by the art of Maurice Utrillo, he is for collectors of expressionism, landscape and modern Australian art.
