Chris Lawry is a contemporary printmaker and artist based in Victoria. Using her signature linocut printing technique, Lawry often draws inspiration from her local surrounding area, with her works representing the Victorian natural landscapes and native flora, as well as scenes from everyday life. Throughout her practice, Lawry’s works explore her personal ethos that “there is beauty and interest to be found everywhere and anywhere”.
In ‘Back of the shops’, Lawry represents her local township with a touching intimacy. An otherwise mundane scene, this landscape work is a testament to Lawry’s artistic ethos to finding beauty in the minutiae of life. In this linocut, as in much of Lawry’s work, ‘Back of the shops’ is a meditation on the artist’s relationship to the local area and environment in which she exists.
Chris Lawry has regularly exhibited in galleries across Victoria, and she has been a finalist in several major print prizes, including the Burnie Print prize in 2019. For collectors of contemporary Australian printmaking, or those enamoured by Australian landscapes, this work is an endearing find.
