This print by Leonard Brown is entirely unique - as a monotype, it is one of a kind. In ‘Untitled’ monochromatic abstract peaks roll across the paper surface, like a film reel slowing down. Brown’s print calls to mind the moment when the illusionary quality of film is revealed to be nothing more than a series of still, near identical images - an exercise in repetition through a non-reproducible medium.

Brown’s practice is one of stark contrasts, with his output equally split between abstract compositions and a dedication to Byzantine period iconography. A work like ‘Untitled’ is not without meaning though, Brown describes his abstract work as a “union with reality”. Far from pure abstraction, these might be experienced as a form of poetry, with “the potential for an intimate participation between realities.”

‘Untitled’ offers a meditation on the inevitability of change over time, revealed through the steady fading of the impression transferred to paper. Another monoprint by Brown from the same period is in the collection of the Queensland Art Gallery (QAGOMA), and he is represented in all other major Australian galleries. For collectors of abstract or minimalist works or those looking to acquire a unique work by a fascinating figure in Australian art, this print is a rare find.
