Helga Salwe’s documentary photography draws attention to the beauty in the mundane of everyday people, places and communities within Australia. “Unfinished Paintings” is a sepia-toned Giclée print that captures the intimacy of her then husband, Michael Leunig’s studio. Her use of direct light creates shadows that form a natural vignette; featuring two canvas paintings, an empty frame and a table scattered with brushes, palettes and rags. Her documentation of this deeply personal space pays a quiet tribute to the creative nature of their relationship and by virtue it preserves the creative space that was embedded in their lives. Though Leunig is not pictured, his unique style is recognised. “Unfinished Paintings” becomes a visual time capsule into the shared domestic and artistic world of two celebrated artists.

Salwe has exhibited widely and is held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, The National Library of Australia and the Epworth Art Foundation.
