Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘AMCO FORMALS’ is a rare and original drawing. It depicts a conductor, normally presented polished and anonymous in a tuxedo, with the tag still attached to his rented suit. Humorous and endearing, Leunig’s drawing speaks to how commercial brands slide into even the most refined of settings as well as the universality of a slip up.
As special as it is rare, ‘AMCO FORMALS’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, collectors of important works on paper or those facing their own orchestra of life. It is simple yet clever, provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection and signed by the artist himself.
