Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘Autumn’ is an original ink drawing for a cartoon. It is quintessential Leunig – an image of melancholy and humour concerned very much with the human plight. A lone figure droops below a poem about the changing of seasons, how autumn washes away the memories of summer. “Autumn. Its autumn! The sweet and sad post-mortem…”.

As special as it is rare, ‘Autumn’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a tender meditation of the passage of time.
