Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘Bedside Table’ brings a quirkiness to the mundane. In this work, Leunig’s signature characters are depicted peeking out from within a bedside table. Executed in warm terracotta tones, this original etching is simple yet charming, with a touch of absurdity.
As special as it is rare, ‘Bedside Table’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a tender meditation on the fruitfulness of finding peace.
