Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was at once tender and perspective, forever preoccupied with the idea of a sacred inner life.
‘Boots and all’ is an etching on paper. On a golden ground, Leunig carves four mismatched heads and four pairs of boots, all varying in kind. Does each slightly wonky, wooden head pair with a set of boots? A work of humour, whimsy and wit, ‘Boots and All’ is named for the Australia colloquialism meaning “wholeheartedly” or “all in” – it’s a rallying cry for living.
As special as it is rare, ‘Boots and All’ comes from the Leunig Familys private collection. It is a jewel for admirers of the cartoonist, dreamers and collectors of iconic works on paper. Time to step inside the artist’s boots.
