Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘Exclusive Interview with Mount Everest’ is an original work composed of hand-written text and a small acrylic painting on paper. This work is a testament to the artist’s signature sense of wit. In this comedic scene, ‘Mount Everest’ is being interviewed as if it is a celebrity, answering questions regarding favourite pastimes and ultimate holiday destinations. In this work, as with many of his cartoons, Leunig infuses non-human things with human personality traits, creating narratives that are humorous in their absurdity.
Provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection and hand-signed by the artist himself, ‘Exclusive Interview with Mount Everest’ is a compelling find for collectors of Leunig.
