Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘FOOTY REPLAY’ is an original drawing for a cartoon. It is tender and satirical, depicting a figure snuggling beside his footy replays. At once a meditation on our obsession with football and the loneliness of contemporary life, where media threaten to replace human connection, this work packs a gentle punch.
As special as it is rare, ‘FOOTY REPLAYS’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, collectors of important works on paper and fans of the AFL. It is recognisably by the artist and provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection.
