Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘Free Spirit’ is a rare original etching. In it, a figure pole vaults over a wire fence, flowers, stars, a bird, dog and moon scattering around him. The phantom has made a break for it. A visualisation of the idiom “free spirit”, this work is both warm and witty, a mediation of the extremes we accept to feel free.
As special as it is rare, ‘Free Spirit’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of iconic works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s spirited moments.
