Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was at once tender and perspective, forever preoccupied with the idea of a sacred inner life.
An exceptionally rare drawing, ‘How to Make Salads’ is quintessential Leunig. A man appears three times – making a salad, eating a salad and digesting a salad, all while never looking away from a manual on making, eating and digesting a salad. Humorous but still tender, ‘How to Make Salads’ reflects on self-help culture and our neurotic need to be guided through the most simple, intuitive and unconscious acts.
As special as it is rare, ‘How to Make Salads’ comes from the Leunig Familys private collection. It is a treat for admirers of the cartoonist, dreamers and collectors of iconic works on paper, as well as a reminder to trust your instincts – there are no rules when it comes to making salad.
