Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘Let Sleeping Dogs Lie’ is an original etching. Wonderfully whimsically, it pictures two dogs nesting in a flower pot – they are like bulbs, sprouting flowers from the tops of their head. What beauty will grow if sleeping dogs are left to lie?
As special as it is rare, ‘Let Sleeping Dogs Lie’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dog people and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a tender meditation on the fruitfulness of finding peace.
