Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
Quintessentially Leunig, ‘...life just fings through your slippers’ is a painting on paper for a cartoon. It is humorous and tender, picturing a couple amidst a picnic, reclining with their child and dog. Brimming with existential angst, the man muses “...life just fings through your slippers…”, translated by his wife to “He says that life is slipping through his fingers…”. The irony is sweet – the human is so lost in his fears of time’s passage, he drifts from the moment, a Spoonerism slipping from his mind.
As special as it is rare, ‘...life just fings through your slippers’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s minor moments.
