Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘Untitled (Read all about it)’ is an original ink drawing, quintessentially Leunig. With his signature blend of deadpan humour and philosophical sadness, Leunig sketches a collapsing world: the economy is a disgrace, the environment a tragedy, society in tatters – and yet, amid the wreckage, a quiet figure offers the final punchline: “Lots and lots of juicy stories. Read all about it.” Satirical, spare, and striking, this work is a critique of the media frenzy and a meditation on the human tendency to consume collapse as entertainment. Part lament, part commentary, this is a powerful work for those who appreciate the delicate balance of humour and despair that defined Leunig’s art.

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (Read all about it)’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s minor moments.
