Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

Rejoice! is an original ink drawing and poem that reflects Leunig’s distinctive blend of wit and warmth. In this piece, a handwritten poem gently honours the flawed, familiar characters of our everyday lives, from the “silly wife” to the “happy neighbor sobbing on all fours.” These simple lines are paired with drifting figures and tiny stars, creating a visual rhythm that complements the poem’s quiet encouragement to find meaning and grace in the ordinary.

As special as it is rare, ‘Rejoice!’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s minor moments.
