Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘The Blessed State’ is an original etching. In it, a figure and bird stand atop a happy horse. It is both day and night, and the figure appears to be a knight. Whimsical, surreal and told with a sense of humour, this work is named after and embodies a state of happiness of wellbeing.

As special as it is rare, ‘The Blessed State’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of iconic works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to pursue happiness whether night or day.
