Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘The Man in the yellow shirt’ is a rare original etching. In it, Leunig’s beloved protagonist pokes his head up from a shirt pocket. Is he a pocket square? Humorous, tender and in an elegant soft gold, ‘The Man in the Yellow shirt’ finds the absurdity in office wear, imagining a new form for the PA.
As special as it is rare, ‘The Man in the yellow shirt’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to pursue whimsy in the drabest spots.
