Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

In this vibrant composition, Leunig’s signature whimsy bursts into full colour. Figures emerge and dissolve within a constellation of red lines, inky gestures and celebratory marks. The result is an abstracted dance between chaos and care. Painted with a spirited palette of purples, oranges and fire-bright reds, this work radiates a musicality, inviting viewers to find rhythm in uncertainty and beauty in the spontaneous.

As special as it is rare, this work is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of contemporary figurative painting. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s minor moments.
