Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘Untitled (A Bird in the Heart)’ is a lithograph that resembles a rock engraving. It is densely populated, alive with birds, stars, a home, trees, love hearts and more. In the image’s centre lies two amorous figures, the shepherds of all the life that whirls around them.
As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (A Bird in the Heart)’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of iconic works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, an ode to the little universe that a life together can reap.
