Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

Untitled (Blue Car) is recognisably Leunig, notwithstanding the signature lower right. Using bright, primary colours, this original painting is rich with the artist’s classic iconography - his everyperson, teapot, chirping bird and resigned dog. Painted using an acrylic medium, Leunig in this artwork has layered painted canvas over the top of painted canvas, imbuing his ‘blue car’ with a wonderful textural quality and depth. A gentle and whimsical scene, this painting is an ode to companionship.

As special as it is rare, ‘Blue Car’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of contemporary figurative painting. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s little moments and routines.
