Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘Untitled (Duck View)’ represents Leunig’s signature cartoon style, executed on a much larger scale. Within this work, Leunig creates a scene that is both whimsical and bizarre - a man leans through a hole in a wall to look at a duck. Utilising his key iconographical and ever-smiling characters, Leunig creates a scene that is somehow both unremarkable and intriguing, a testament to his ability to provoke interest.

As special as it is rare, this work is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers, and collectors of works on paper. Provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, this tender work is a gentle reminder to be present, to embrace life’s quiet entanglements, and to find meaning in its smallest, most whimsical moments.
