Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
‘Untitled (Extra Vintage)’ is an original drawing for a cartoon that is composed of six individual panels. Using the cartoonist’s signature witty style, this work presents a comedic scene - a party of friends toasting to the future, then moments later drunkenly reverting to dwelling on the past. As with many of his works, Leunig uses this cartoon to humorously explore the quirks and contradictions of human behaviour.
‘Untitled (Extra Vintage)’ offers collectors a unique insight into Leunig’s working process as a newspaper cartoonist, with individually drawn scenes assembled together to form a cohesive and humour narrative. Provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection and hand-signed by Leunig himself, this work is a compelling find for collectors of the artist, or lovers of important works on paper.
