Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, he built a world of many decades that recurrently returned to the idea – or desire – for an innocent and sacred inner life.
This original drawing is rare to market. It is quintessentially Leunig, picturing a figure gazing wistfully at a fallen star. Outside a crowded constellation twinkles; the fallen star, like the man on the edge of his single bed, appears lonely, couped away from community.
As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (Fallen Star)’ is a beautiful, moving drawing. It is a jewel for admirers of the cartoonist and collectors of iconic works on paper, provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection and hand-signed by the artist himself.
