Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

In this original drawing, Leunig turns his gaze toward the lifelong pursuit of finding oneself. He storyboards a figure locked in a game of hide and seek – he counts to one hundred and begins searching only to discover that it is in fact himself that he is looking for. Witty yet gently profound, the cartoon ends with a thought-provoking musing: “Now… what’s best… the search or the discovery… eh?”.

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (Hide and Seek)’ is a wonderful find for admirers of Leunig, collectors of political art and those in self-discovery mode. It is recognisably by the artist and hand-signed by Leunig himself.
