Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

In this incisive early work, Leunig turns his gaze toward the pitfalls of modern education, drawing a professorial ‘class conscious’ character mid-lecture. Marked by an absurdist yet cutting sense of humour, the work contrasts institutional ideals of individuality and difference with the prejudices and contradictions that can exist beneath them. It is a compelling example of Leunig’s ability to capture complex issues with panache. 

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (Modern Education)’ is a find for admirers of Leunig and collectors of political art. It is recognisably by the artist and hand-signed by Leunig himself. School is in session!
