Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, he built a world of many decades that recurrently returned to the idea – or desire – for an innocent and sacred inner life.
This original ink drawing is rare to market. A whimsical configuration, it depicts Leunig’s iconic protagonist tying himself in knots while reading, a bird at his crown and cup of tea at his feet. It is a work about the pleasures of reading and resting, spontaneously drawn yet instantly recognisable.
As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (Perched)’ comes from the Leunig Family’s private collection. It is a jewel for admirers of the cartoonist, ponderers and collectors of iconic works on paper.
