Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘Untitled (Square Eyes)’ is a painting on paper. Simple yet joyful, it depicts a figure with glasses drinking – or rather eating – a cup of tea. A rose blooms behind him. A comic and poet of the everyday, Leunig found inspiration in the great issues of our time and smallest moments, like the pleasure of indulging in a cup of tea.

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (Square Eyes)’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig and collectors of important works on paper. It is a unique find, provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection and hand-signed by the artist.
