Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘Untitled (The Big Chardonnay) is an original ink and wash work on paper in the artists typical cartoon style. Presented as a quintessentially Australian roadside attraction - it is both joyous and satirical - depicting a bus full of tourists arriving at a comically large wine-bottle-shaped winery, Leunig is creating comedic commentary on Australias booming viticultural tourism industry.

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (The Big Chardonnay’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, collectors of important works on paper, and lovers of Australian wine. It is immediately recognisable as belonging to the artist’s oeuvre and provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection.
