Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

In this early original cartoon, Leunig satirises a debate that struck 1960s and 70s Australian politics. The leader of the Democratic Labor Party – Senator Vince Gair – was waging an aggressive campaign against then Liberal Prime Minister, John Gorton, accusing him of being soft on communism. As Leunig suggests however, this threat of “communist menace” was perhaps not so material, but instead part of a very entertaining political matinee.

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (The Communist is Pulling My Leg)’ is a humorous find for admirers of Leunig, collectors of political art and those in search of a good laugh. It is recognisably by the artist and hand-signed by Leunig himself.
