Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.
The exuberant original painting ‘Untitled (The Couple)’ is an ode to companionship. Two figures hold their hands aloft as though entertaining a baby or greeting the viewer. They are warmly rendered and brightly coloured, the kind of couple you want to befriend.
As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (The Couple)’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, dreamers and collectors of contemporary figurative painting. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection, a reminder to be present and enjoy life’s minor moments.
