Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for his cartoons published in the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was one of whimsy, wit and a deep humanity.

‘Untitled (The Space Race)’ is a charming original drawing. Leunig draws a figure atop a meteor, sheltered from falling stars by his umbrella. He is the lone winner, a crowd of desperate men hopelessly clinging to the rock’s underside. A commentary on the competitiveness of contemporary life and loneliness of success, ‘Untitled (The Space Race)’ is gently thought-provoking.

As special as it is rare, ‘Untitled (The Space Race)’ is a jewel for admirers of Leunig, collectors of important works on paper and battlers through the rat race. It is recognisably by the artist and provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection.
