Keith Looby is an unlikely art star. Born to Irish Catholic immigrants and a dedicated socialist, his career saw him often at odds with the art world. Despite this friction however, he earned great esteem, winning the Sulman, Blake and Archibald prizes and ending up in collections of Australia’s national galleries.
In this original graphic, Looby’s idiosyncratic style beams forth. Intricate and almost religious in aura, it is strangely timeless - reaching across style, medium and message to transfix the viewer. What the viewer recognises in this world, is up to them.
A teenage prodigy turned iconoclast, Looby is an intriguing figure. He is considered one of Australia’s greatest living artists and yet, shys away from this acclaim. Represented across public and private collections, he is the subject of a recent feature documentary. For fans of Looby, contemporary Australian art, prints and the ‘underground figure’, this is the work for you.
