Melbourne-based artist Cally Lotz is best known for her still life oil paintings. Her practice is driven by a fascination with the visual qualities of painting itself, focusing on how objects can be observed and represented rather than on symbolic meaning. Through her work, Lotz explores texture, colour, light, and tone , continually experimenting with different techniques to capture the beauty and character of everyday subjects.

In ‘Drifting into Fantasy’, Lotz creates an almost surrealist scene - a basket of silver forks, spoons and knives, almost moving autonomously across the interior landscape. Through accentuating the shadows of the cutlery, Lotz infuses this scene with a palpable sense of movement and dramatic energy. Familiar household objects are transformed, taking on an unexpected presence and a curious sense of individuality.

Over her career, Lotz has exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows across Australia and internationally. She has been selected as a finalist in the Bayside Painting Prize, Wyndham Art Prize, and Omnia Art Prize, amongst many. Her works are held in the collections of the University of South Africa, and St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. For collectors of energetic still life compositions, Lotz’s ‘Drifting into Fantasy’ would be an intriguing addition to any collection.
