In this elegant etching, Australian artist Francis Lymburner sets up an interior scene. Captured from above, two characters are captured in conversation. Unable to join in, the viewer is left imagining what their topic may be. In the 1940s, alongside William Dobell and Russell Drysdale, Lymburner was at the forefront of Sydney’s art scene. A drawer of animals - human and other - performers and the everyday, he propelled the viewer into his world.
In 1992, the Art Gallery of New South Wales held a retrospective of his work and today, he is represented in most public collections.
The present etching, completed by Lymburner prior to his death, was printed posthumously, verified by the artist’s widow, Mavis Lymburner, and authorised with initials by the artist’s son, Julian Lymburner.
