Jeffrey Makin is a renowned Australian artist who is best known for his landscapes. Makin's vision can be both delicate and desolate, and sweet and sublime. From the sea to canyons, deserts and rainforest, Makin transcribes the textures and curvatures of Australia's wide land and its native flora and fauna.

Makin’s celebrated Cockatoo lithographs from 1986 are bold and graphic, featuring simplified forms with textural variety that nod to both cockatoo plumage and a treed landscape backdrop. Cockatoo Yellow, in particular, employs a vivid yellow palette—potentially referencing the bright crest of the native Australian bird. While abstract in execution, the title offers a conceptual link to the natural world. Related works in the series, such as Cockatoo Pink and Cockatoo Grey, share the same compositional approach but differ primarily in dominant hue. The graphic forms are animated by deliberately irregular, expressive marks that lend a sense of energy and hand-crafted immediacy. The bright, saturated scheme enhances visual impact, encouraging the viewer to engage with the work as an object of pure colour and form—an appealing proposition for collectors interested in colour and form over realistic narrative.

Makin is represented in all national, state and most regional collections, and is also a multi-time finalist for the Wynne Prize. Parallel to his work as an artist, he is an art critic and academic.
